Which Master?

My pastor (Douglas Wilson) is fond of saying, "It's not whether, but which."

That ties well with something Dennis F. Kinlaw wrote: "Satan disguises submission to himself under the ruse of personal autonomy. He never asks us to become his servants. Never once did the serpent say to Eve, "I want to be your master." The shift in commitment is never from Christ to evil; it is always from Christ to self. And instead of his will, self-interest now rules and what I want reigns. And that is the essence of sin."

There is always a master. Which would you rather serve: Jesus Christ? or Satan? Christ died for others. Satan died for nobody. So who's the more loving master?

If you think you are the master of your own life, then ultimately you're serving the devil. When we serve only ourselves, the devil gets what he wants. That's the lie he sells: "Be your own master. Determine your own fate." -- So how's that working out for you?
